No doubt that in this heat I can’t even think of fall. But it’s true, the colder days are coming towards us. Since I recently decluttered my closet, I don’t have a lot left. Being a minimalist I’m fine with having limited clothes, but I would like them to be items that I truly love and that go together, making infinite options for outfits.
To be honest, I can’t see anymore black clothing. Yes, it’s the easiest choice, but color is so much fun! Fall colors are so beautiful, and I really wanted to incorporate them in my fall capsule wardrobe. I might create another version with black as the main basic for all of you practical gals out there.
My main choices are a little unique – even the basics have a little twist. Unique items create a more interesting outfit, but since they are still basic, you can mix & match without being sick of wearing the same item again and again.
How to build a fall capsule wardrobe?
Layers
Fall is a transitional season, so the weather tends to change more drastically during the day so we can easily find ourselves dressed awkwardly.
Choosing items that can create interesting looks and are easy to get out of is important for a fall capsule wardrobe. You start your day with a top, a cardigan and a jacket, by lunch you’re only with the top but during the evening you throw your jacket back on. For many pieces to look good together, you need to initially choose items that go well with each other.
In my own capsule wardrobe, I chose a lot of layering pieces, some shorter, some longer, warmer and lighter options and also plenty of basics.
colors
Spring and Fall are the colorful seasons – nature is absolutely breathtaking. There’s no reason we won’t take advantage of these beautiful, lovely colors and incorporate them in our capsule wardrobes. Like I’ve said before, it’s easy to fall into the trap of black all the time, but there are more basic and neutral colors besides black.
I chose cream, beige, and brown as the foundation to my fall capsule wardrobe. They are light, feminine colors that go well with the rest of the colors of the rainbow just as well as with black.
For accent colors I went mostly with green. A little orange and blue are coming from the fabrics – denim and faux suede.
You can choose whatever colors you love for fall, it’s a colorful and fun season to dress up. Just make sure you go mostly with basics and a few accent colors, so you’d be able to create infinite interesting outfits.
verstility
Versatility is a combination of the option to layer and to mix colors. When you build your capsule wardrobe, you want to make sure that pieces are matching. I prefer to go with a certain style for all pieces because it’s easier for me to get dressed. I’m not the most stylish person, and I can’t pull off an outfit that some items are feminine and some rocker style for example. You should be aware to your own personal style and preferences and them choose items that go well together.
Shoes
Shoes are very important in the colder days, since they keep you warm and cozy more then anything else. Choose shoes that match your wardrobe style and colors.
More items for a fall capsule wardrobe:
T-shirts:
A t-shirt is a basic for every wardrobe and every season. For the hotter days of fall a t-shirt is a great lighter piece to reach for.
Tops:
A long sleeve top is a must basic to have for every outfit. You can wear it alone or over a button up and create an interesting look.
Button-ups:
A button up is a very versatile piece, you can wear it alone, under a sweater or open as a layering piece. A white button up is a classic and a flannel is a fall staple.
Sweaters:
For the colder days of fall, transitioning to winter, a cozy warm sweater is a must. Choose a good quality sweater for warmth and multipole wear.
Bottoms:
Pants that fit perfectly will transform every outfit into a striking one. With only 5 pairs of bottoms you will be able to create so many different looks.
dresses:
My favorite fall outfit is a sweater dress and boots. Even though it gets colder, you can still rock a dress and look amazing. Throw on a trench coat over it and you’re good to go.
Outerwear:
Layering pieces are key in a fall capsule wardrobe. Good outerwear will keep you warm and stylish any day.
shoes:
Good quality boots are important in a fall capsule wardrobe since they keep you warm and will also last for a long time.

Hey Sondria, I’m glad you liked it! Fall weather is perfect huh? 😉
I’ve been wanting to start a capsule wardrobe and this has been the easiest to follow how-to guide I’ve seen. Especially the tip about identifying your “base” colors and picking accent colors on top of that. My go to accents are always an olive green and maroon, so I’m looking forward to creating some minimal looks. Also, so excited for your e course on minimalism!!
Hey Chels, thank you!! I’m glad you found my guide useful. It took me some time to get used to the minimalist wardrobe thing haha… but it’s so much better than to shop all the time and never have anything to wear haha! Let me know how was the course! Have a great weekend 🙂
I love the trench coat definitely getting one for fall
